Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of membership can UCSF students and employees have?
With the City CarShare UCSF program, you can choose to have a departmental
account, a personal account or BOTH. You can also create a household account so
your spouse, roommate or significant other can join your personal account.
When you are signed up for both a department and a personal account and reserve
a car, you will have the option to check business or personal use. Business
driving will be charged to your UCSF department. Personal driving will be
charged to your credit card.
Where are the cars?
City CarShare has over 100 locations in SF, Berkeley and Oakland, including the
following UCSF locations: Laurel Heights, Mission Bay, Mission Center Building (MCB),
Mount Zion, Parnassus and SF General Hospital. Once you're a member, you can
use any car at any location.
How does it work?
City CarShare vehicles can be reserved online or via the telephone. You can
access the cars 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, using an electronic key called a
"fob". When you become a member we'll send you a fob, a member ID and a password.
The fob works on all of our cars. Members log in, reserve a car, access it
using their fob, and get in and go. There's no paperwork involved.
How much does it cost?
Regular City CarShare rental rates apply (typically $5/hour and 40¢/mile). There is a $25 yearly membership fee. You pay no application fee, no deposit, and no monthly fee.
How can I get my department to join?
Have them fill out the departmental application. If they have questions, they
can call us at (415) 995-8588.
Can I join if my department hasn't joined?
Yes, you can sign up for a personal account now. You can always join a
departmental account later.
Can I make one-way trips?
No. You always have to return the car to its original location at the end of
the reservation. But you won't have to look for end-of-trip parking.
What about parking?
You are responsible for finding your own parking while you are using a City
CarShare vehicle. When you return, simply park in the reserved City CarShare
parking spot where you picked up the car.
Who is eligible?
Any employee or full-time student of UCSF may join the City CarShare UCSF
program. Your spouse, roommate or significant other can join your personal
account to form a household account. For more information on household accounts,
see below.
I am an existing member of City CarShare; can I join this program?
Yes. If you already have a City CarShare account, you can join this program
by emailing
Member Services.
Once your account is set-up, your original City CarShare deposit will be
refunded to you as a credit on your City CarShare bill. If you're signing up
for both a personal and departmental account, your one fob and login will work
for both accounts. Just choose the account you want to use when you reserve the
car.
Can I have a household account with the City CarShare UCSF program?
Yes. If you have a personal account, you can have additional people (for
instance a spouse or roommate) join your account. You'll get one bill. It will
be your responsibility to pay it. Each person will get their own electronic key
and member ID, and each will be charged an annual membership fee.
