I am already a City CarShare member; can I join the UC Berkeley plan?
Where are the cars? BACK TO TOP City CarShare has hundreds of locations throughout Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco, El Cerrito, and Albany with many pods close to the UC Berkeley campus, including a vehicle at the University Village in Albany. Once you're a member, you can use any car at any location. What's more, City CarShare has partners in other cities in the US, and even outside of the US, that allow our members to join while in town for little or no sign-up fees. Visit our roaming page to learn more. How does it work? BACK TO TOP City CarShare vehicles can be reserved online or via the telephone. You can access the cars 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, using an electronic key called a "fob." When you become a member we'll provide you a fob, a member ID and password, and a Gas Card ID. The fob works on all of our cars as long as you have a valid reservation. Just log in, reserve a car, access it with your fob, and go. There's no paperwork involved. How much does it cost? BACK TO TOP In general you drive for $5.50/hour (weekdays)/ $6/hour (weekends 5 p.m. Friday - 8 a.m. Monday) + 35¢/mile). For premium and capacity vehicles, add $2/hour. There is a $50 annual membership fee for our UC Berkeley student plan. You pay no deposit, and a discounted $15 application fee. There is a $15 one-time application fee for each member you add to your account. What if I want to take a long-distance trip? BACK TO TOP You have several options with City CarShare. Our Extended Freedom Trips give you the opportunity to take that trip to Santa Cruz without emptying your savings account. Drive up to 24 hours and 200 miles for just $48 (weekdays)/ $52 (weekends 5 p.m. Friday - 8 a.m. Monday) + 10¢/mile (40c/mile after 200 miles). Add $12 for premium and capacity vehicles. You can even link Extended Freedom Trips together for a weekend away (three day maximum.) To apply an Extended Freedom Trip credit, simply mark how many credits you would like to use when making your reservation. Another option is to use City CarShare's special discount pricing to rent a car from City Rent-A-Car. For long-term, long-distance trips, car rental is a smart choice and we encourage you to check which option works best for your particular trip. For more information, email us or call 415-995-8588 and press 0 when prompted to speak to a member services associate. Can I make one-way trips? BACK TO TOP No. But you won't have to look for end-of-trip parking because you always have to return the car to its original location at the end of the reservation. What about parking? BACK TO TOP You are responsible for finding your own parking while you are using a City CarShare vehicle. When you return, simply park in the reserved City CarShare parking spot where you picked up the car. Who is eligible? BACK TO TOP Any full-time student of UC Berkeley may join the City CarShare UC Berkeley plan. If you are over 21 you can create a household account and add up to four (4) members to your account. When your family members, roommates or significant other joins your household account (each will be charged a $15 application fee), you will all share the $50 annual membership fee. Each person will get his or her own electronic key fob and member ID but you will get one bill. Members must have at least 2 consecutive years of driving experience. If you already have a City CarShare account, you can join this plan by emailing us. If you submitted a deposit, we will refund it to you as a credit on your City CarShare bill. Also, we will waive the application fee since you are already signed up. |
