Joining City CarShare is easy — most people meet our four Basic Requirements without even trying. Those who don't should check the more detailed requirements below or give us a call to discuss your situation.

• You're at least 21 years old.
• You hold a valid U.S. driver's license from any state.
• You have a driving history of at least two consecutive years.
• Your safety record meets minimum specifications.

If you've had your current driver's license for less than two years, please provide your previous U.S. driver's license number on the application in the space provided.

If your previous license was a non-U.S. license, you must provide documentation of your driving history. We prefer documentation from an agency equivalent to a state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). If there is no such agency, we will accept documentation from an insurance company. On your application, please add a note that you are sending such documents separately, then fax or mail them to our office. For information on DMVs in the U.S. and Canada, go to dmvwebsites.com. (Please note: All documents must be provided in English.)

Your safety record doesn't have to be perfect, but it must not exceed the following:

• One (1) accident in the past three years. (If you have had two accidents in the past three years but can provide proof of not-at-fault status, we can waive this requirement.)
• Two (2) moving violations (for either personal or business driving) within the past three years
• Three (3) combined moving violations or accidents in the past three years.

Your record also must not show:

• Any major violation in the past four years, including: reckless driving, driving under the influence (DUI), vehicular manslaughter, exhibition of speed, leaving the scene of an accident
• Any violation for driving on a suspended/revoked license in the past four years
• More than four (4) of the following violations in the past three years: failure to appear (FTA), unlicensed driver, no proof of insurance.

Finally, you must agree to inform us if your driver's license is suspended or revoked.

If you don't have a current U.S. driver's license, you must obtain one before applying to City CarShare. You can visit www.dmv.ca.gov for information on how to obtain a California driver's license. You must supply 2 years of driving history from your home country.
