Do you have what it takes to be a City CarShare driver? The odds are pretty good.

It’s easy to become a City CarShare member.

“Requirements” is just a big word for the four standards that most people meet with little to no effort. Any potential City CarShare members who don’t meet our basic requirements are welcome to give us a call or swing by our office to discuss their situation.

The 4 basic City CarShare requirements that all drivers must meet:

  • Be at least 21 years old (or 18 years old for students from our partnering colleges and universities, click here to learn more).
  • Hold a valid U.S. driver’s license (any state) OR international license.
  • Have a driving history of at least two consecutive years (details below).
  • Have a driving record that meets minimum safety specifications (details below).

Driving History. Your driving history must include at least two consecutive years and you need meet one of the following conditions:

U.S. License. If you’ve had your current state driver’s license for less than two years, please provide your previous U.S. state driver’s license number in the space provided on your application. If your licensed driving history within the past two years was not in California, please be ready to provide a photocopy or proof of issuance and be aware that other state laws may slightly delay the application process.*

Non-U.S. License. If your previous license was a non-U.S. license and you have had your U.S. license for less than two years, then you must provide documentation of your driving history. We prefer documentation from an agency equivalent to a state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). If there is no such agency, we will accept documentation from an insurance company. On your application, please add a note that you are sending such documents separately, then fax or mail them to our office. For information on DMVs in the U.S. and Canada, go to dmvwebsites.com. (Please note: All documents must be provided in English.) To expedite the application process for your City CarShare membership, it may be helpful to secure an International License for your duration in the States.

Foreign Licenses. If you don’t have a current U.S. driver’s license, you must obtain one before applying to City CarShare. You can visit www.dmv.ca.gov for information on how to obtain a California driver’s license. You must supply two years of driving history from your home country.

Safety Record. Your record doesn’t have to be perfect, but it must not exceed the following:

  • One accident in the past three years. (If you’ve had two accidents in the past three years but can prove you weren’t at fault, we’ll waive this requirement.)
  • Two moving violations within the past three years.
  • Three combined moving violations or accidents in the past three years.

Additionally, your record must not show:

  •  Any major violation in the past four years, including: reckless driving, driving under the influence (DUI), vehicular manslaughter, exhibition of speed, or leaving the scene of an accident.
  • Any violation for driving on a suspended/revoked license in the past four years.
  • More than four incidents of the following violations in the past three years: failure to appear (FTA), unlicensed driver, no proof of insurance.

Finally, you must agree to inform us if your driver’s license is suspended or revoked.

*City CarShare cannot retrieve driving records from Hawaii. If your current or previous license is from Hawaii, you will need to contact the Hawaiian DMV and request a driving record abstract to provide to us before we can approve your application for membership. Please follow the steps listed above for a Non-U.S. License.
