City CarShare promotes cleaner air and better use of urban space by reducing car ownership and usage
with our service. This is why we do all we can to extend car sharing to as many as possible with
our unique programs and low pricing. To boost the health of our cities, we also advance other forms
of alternative transportation such as biking, walking, and public transit through our marketing and
advocacy work. And as a nonprofit, every dollar we make gets invested back into our communities.
Here are some examples of what we do to invest in the Bay Area:
CommunityShare plan: City CarShare subsidizes membership and driving costs for those who qualify as
low-income members and who are referred by one of our partner organizations. Currently we partner
with the
Glide Economic Development Corporation and
Mercy Housing in San Francisco
and
Resources for Community Development in Berkeley to offer
CommunityShare plan discounts to residents of their
buildings.
Recipients of Working Families Credit programs in
San Francisco may also join City CarShare as
CommunityShare member. If your organization serves low-income
residents or clients and you are interested in this program,
email us.
Access Program: Another way we extend car sharing is through our
AccessMobile. Launched in 2008, the
AccessMobile was the first wheelchair
accessible car share vehicle in the nation. This program was made possible in part by a grant from
The National Organization on Disability and it
is co-sponsored by the
City of Berkeley.
Here are quotes from two members who require mobility devices to get around:
"I can now go to places not accessible by public transportation without paying $300 for one day."
"It's great to be able to use an accessible van without the cost or daily responsibility of ownership; it's affordable; and it completely opens up options for me."
Bay Area Wilderness Training car share partnership for youth educators: To remove transportation
barriers that youth educators face, we partnered in 2008 with
Bay Area Wilderness Training
(BAWT) to place their two vans into our fleet. All members can use these vans,
as well as youth educators, who use them to take at-risk youth on wilderness-bound educational and
inspirational adventures.
Advocating for sustainable mobility: City CarShare works with local transit
agencies, nonprofits, and policy makers to grow access to car sharing and other alternative transit
modes in the Bay Area. We also present at forums to promote the benefits of car sharing over
ownership; work with other car share providers to share resources and information; and released
reports to validate the positive impacts of car sharing and assist in its growth. In the Bay Area,
City CarShare is the only provider that has signed the North American car sharing organizations'
Code of Ethics. As a signatory, we
have expressed our long-term commitment to socially responsible car sharing industry practices.
