Holiday Discounts for All

Happy holidays! It's that time of year again, when we all share much more than CCS cars. As members of our community-based organization, you've shown dedication in using other forms of alternative transit, reducing automobile use in the Bay Area. As a City CarShare member, you're also supporting the 'green' movement, by sharing the greenest fleet available and helping to save 55 million pounds of CO2 locally - this year alone. Through CCS programs and educational efforts, you're also supporting local businesses, organizations and groups (see below), helping to make the Bay Area a better place to live.

Without your respect for the concept of sharing, our service wouldn't work. Keeping cars clean, returning them on time and giving that little smile to other CCS members proves that sharing responsibly is a great community builder. And since you are saving about $450 dollars each month over car ownership*, we're guessing you have a little more cash to share with family and friends this holiday season.

To show our gratitude and celebrate the power of a community sharing, we are saying thanks for sharing this year by extending special holiday discounts to all members.

Whether you need a car for overnight visits with family who live farther away, or for busy holiday shopping excursions and errands, we are giving you a break in the form of two discounts.

A Year of Giving Back

We're lucky to call the Bay Area home. Over the past nine years, our members, friends and supporters have been key to our success as a mission-driven car share provider. We are proud of our positive impact, which is made possible through our programs and our unique nonprofit business model. We lead the industry in offering a fleet comprised only of 100% fuel and emission efficient cars to share in 15-minute increments. Our pricing is designed to save you a lot of money, with the lowest rates available. And because every dollar we make goes right back into the community, our support and advocacy for transit-oriented, eco-friendly causes and programs makes CCS one of the most thriving car share organizations in North America.

We love the Bay Area and consider ourselves lucky to partner with many remarkable local groups and initiatives. Here's a recap of our program work in 2009:

CommunityShare plan: To boost accessibility of car sharing, City CarShare subsidizes membership and driving costs for those who qualify as low-income members and are referred by one of our partner organizations. This year, we've established partnerships with the Glide Economic Development Corporation in SF and Resources for Community Development/Oxford Plaza in Berkeley to offer CommunityShare plan discounts to residents of their buildings. We continue to provide services to CalWorks and various affordable housing locations. Stay tuned for more as we will soon be working with Working Families Credit Program and other organizations to grow the CommunityShare program even more in 2010.

Access Program: Another way we extend car sharing is through our AccessMobile. Launched in 2008, the AccessMobile is still the nation's only wheelchair accessible car share vehicle. We are pleased to report that it is growing in popularity and usage. This fall, we were awarded a Coro Fellow to review usage and collect user experiences from Access members. Our Fellow, Susan Lieu, uncovered some great feedback. Below are a few quotes from people who participate in this program, which is made possible in-part by a grant from the National Organizations on Disabilities and is co-sponsored by the City of Berkeley:
  • "I can now go to places not accessible by public transportation without paying $300 for one day."
  • "It's great to be able to use an accessible van without the cost or daily responsibility of ownership; it's affordable; it completely opens up options for me."

Bay Area Wilderness Training car share partnership for youth educators: To remove transportation barriers that youth educators face, we partnered in 2008 with Bay Area Wilderness Training (BAWT) to place their two vans into our fleet. All members can use these vans, as well as youth educators, who use them to take at-risk youth on wilderness-bound educational and inspirational adventures. Now with 74 drivers signed up, this program is poised for continued growth with the recent addition of the Presidio's Chrissy Field Center (CFC) as a new BAWT program affiliate. CCS will support CFC's transportation funding to youth groups for kids' camping field trips in 2010.

Advocating for sustainable mobility: This year we released a best practices guide for developers to manage parking spaces in a manner that saves them money while supporting alternative transit options. City CarShare and Nelson Nygaard co-presented the findings at TransForm's annual summit and we are using the report to encourage developers to decrease parking spaces to achieve sustainability goals and cut costs. The report is available for free and downloadable here.

A list of many of the organizations we've worked with this year can be found at the end of this newsletter, click here.

City CarShare is giving a Shout Out to the SF Silent Film Festival

Step into the past and be entertained "old-school style" at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. This year is the festival's 5th Annual Winter Event at the Castro Theatre, on Saturday, December 12. As the Festival celebrates the past and its relevance to our time, City CarShare looks forward to a sustainable future where the past can be appreciated and preserved. Recognizing the cultural value of 'vintage' film and the one-of-a-kind Castro Theatre, City CarShare is proud to support the festival this year.

As the official Ride of the Festival, City CarShare will supply the greenest wheels for the festival's special guests--including Buster Keaton's granddaughter Melissa Cox, and world-renowned musical accompanists Dennis James, Donald Sosin, and Robert Israel, as well as making it possible to transport heavy film cans to and from the theater.

As a City CarShare member, you get a discount on tickets! Get $2 off each ticket or $7 off the Festival Pass when you show your fob at the Castro Theatre box office on the day of the show. We will also be giving away some free tickets to our Facebook fans, so become a fan if you aren't one already.

The Winter Event lineup includes five crowd-thrilling entertainments. There is something for everyone with films ranging from Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness, directed by the team that created the original King Kong, to the North American premiere of Abel Gance's renowned anti-war epic J'accuse. Also among the lineup is Sherlock Jr. with some of the most astonishing effects ever put on film and West of Zanzibar, and the short film The Goat. Following J'accuse, there will be drinks, appetizers, fabulous company, and live music at the festival party in the Castro Theatre mezzanine!

For more information on the films and to purchase tickets visit www.silentfilm.org.

Looking for eco-friendly Holiday gifts? Check out Non*Mart, a design studio and shop that uses post-consumer waste and repurposed materials to create new goods and services. City CarShare member Shasha Petrenko started Non*Mart with Kathryn Kenworth to explore alternatives to consumerism and develop more relational, less commercial means of economic exchange. Non*Mart is open until January 15th at the Y2Y Gallery (251 Balboa Street, SF) so swing by and barter your way into some creative gifts to impress anyone on your list.

While communicating with Sasha about routine City CarShare business via e-mail, we also discovered Sasha's website featuring her Pocket-house. Complimenting Sasha on her work, she let us know that City CarShare was one of the reasons she could complete the project: "Thanks to City CarShare, I had access to vehicles for transporting materials. Without City CarShare, I couldn't have created the Pocket-house." This piece, exhibited at many museums and galleries, was created as a solution to Sasha's increasingly transient lifestyle as an attempt to combine her art practice and her need for shelter. The Pocket-house is a one-person portable shelter pod that can be easily moved and installed by an individual with a pick-up truck (another use for our Tayota Tacomas!) and explores issues of land-use, community and space—all facets of our world that City CarShare works everyday to support and improve. Thanks for sharing Sasha!

Driving Tip: Return Them Like New

One of the benefits of sharing our cars is that they feel like your own. We want you to feel at ease in our cars, but please remember that sharing means returning the car in the same condition it was in at the beginning of your trip. Getting into a car with stinky fast food wrappers, pet hair on the seat, or a gas tank on Empty is no fun for anyone. At the end of your trip, do a clean sweep of the car and remove all of your personal belongings, trash and, yes, even that empty coffee cup or water bottle. If you ever come across a car where the previous member has forgotten some of these sharing basics, be sure to let us know at 415-995-8588.

Christmas Tree Hauling Tips
Need to haul a Christmas tree this season? Reserve a truck and avoid most of the needle mess. If you are using a standard car, wrap the tree so you don't get sticky sap and pine needles all over the interior of the car. To carry the tree on top of the car, place a blanket on the roof and then fasten the tree on top of the blanket with ropes.
