San Francisco Pride Recap

We feel lucky and blessed to live in the Bay Area. On Saturday June 28th and Sunday June 29th, we also felt proud beyond measure. The City CarShare team, along with our fabulous volunteers, took to the streets of San Francisco in the 38th Annual SF LGBT Pride Celebration and Parade. We know many of you were also enjoying the festivities, including John L. who received free grandstand seating tickets for his glowing City CarShare testimonial. John is proud to be a City CarShare member because "our nonprofit structure allows us to take on special initiatives, like partnering with the City of Berkeley to offer the nation's first-ever wheelchair accessible car sharing van. Wow!" As a local nonprofit, City CarShare is thrilled to support and celebrate diversity and equality in the Bay Area.

Decked out in vibrant colors and adorned with handcrafted wings shaped in the CCS logo, City CarShare staff and volunteers marched and boogied in San Francisco's legendary Pride parade. We were prevelant throughout the weekend with luminaries like Mark Leno and Ross Mirkarimi using our vehicles in the parade to show support of car sharing.

Our booth was a flurry of activity with friends and newcomers alike stopping by as we shared the word and gave away goodies with our popular Spin-the-Wheel game. For members who stopped by our booth, the "Guess the Rainbow" candy contest was back from last year. Congratulations to Isabel J., member since 2006, whose guess of 4,458 came the closest to the actual 4,501 skittles. Isabel won $50 in driving credit! This year we also had a special contest for new sign-ups and lucky new member Melina R., won an iPod speaker system.

A special thanks to all of our energetic, passionate, and fun volunteers who helped make the weekend a success. We couldn't have done it without you! Join us again at an event or in our office, whenever you like.

Urban Investment - More Bang for Your Block

As the summer days heat up, many of us will enjoy a cool drink while sitting at a sidewalk table on a green and walkable street or public plaza. These neighborhood respites don't just happen. It takes a lot of work to create livable streets and great public spaces. That's why we appreciate Livable City. This local nonprofit organization advocates for calmer San Francisco streets and complete neighborhoods, where walking, bicycling, and transit are the best choices for most trips; where public spaces are beautiful, well-designed, and well-maintained; and where housing is more plentiful and more affordable. Livable City has done a lot to promote car sharing too - they sponsored legislation that mandates large new housing developments in San Francisco to provide car sharing and secure bicycle parking. If you'd like to support Livable City and stay informed, you can join for $30, a $15 discount off their regular membership. To take advantage of the City CarShare discount, sign up on Livable City's secure donation page (https://livablecity.org/donate), select other as your contribution level and enter $30 as your membership amount, and add carshare in the "I wish to make a gift" box just below.

Driving Tip - Ways to be a Greener Car Sharer

As a CCS member, you are already mindful of the environment and your impact on it. Here are some more tips on ways to be an even greener car sharer:

Save A Tree
  • Lighten your environmental footprint by receiving your monthly bill via email. You can change your statement delivery method to "Online Only" via our website. Just log-in to your account, click on the "Account Information" tab, then click on the "Profile" tab.
Save Some Plastic
  • Our reusable "Share the Car, Share the Bag" totes are located in all of our cars. The next time you go to the store, grab the bag, use it for your groceries and return it to any CCS vehicle whenever you can.
Save Some Gas
  • Drive at moderate speeds. If you're driving on a highway where high speeds are okay, try driving at 55 mph, rather than 65 or 75 mph.
  • Keep it smooth. When possible, accelerate smoothly and try to avoid hard braking.
  • Shut off the engine. Our hybrids shut down when idle, saving fuel and decreasing CO2 emissions. If you are not driving a hybrid, you can mimic this behavior by simply switching off the engine when you're at a standstill for more than 3 minutes. (When you do this, just remember to put the car in (P)ark!)

Time to Get Handy

City CarShare is thrilled to partner with Cole Hardware. With summer in full swing it's the perfect time to tackle those fix-it-yourself projects around the house. When you shop at any Cole Hardware location, mention your friendship with City CarShare, and we'll receive 10% of your purchases in the form of a Cole Valley Gift Card. We'll use this card to purchase needed supplies and to keep our prices low.

Do you own or work for a local business or nonprofit too? City Car Share is building a membership benefit program as an extra advantage to our loyal and environmentally conscious members. If you are interested in partnering with us to offer other City CarShare members an exclusive discount on your product or service, please email marketing@citycarshare.org for more information.

Want to Know What We're Up To?

Check out our new events page to see where we will be sharing the word around the Bay Area. If you are a current volunteer or interested in volunteering, this is a great resource to see what opportunities are available. Throughout the year, we participate in tons of street fairs, community meetings and neighborhood events. If you want to send us information on an outreach opportunity in your neighborhood, shoot us an email at marketing@citycarshare.org.

Myth Busters Are Back!

Myth: All car sharing organizations are the same.

Fact: Not true!

City CarShare is truly unique. With members driving our green fleet of cars (all of them are fuel efficient) City CarShare saves millions of pounds of greenhouse gas emissions and reduces congestion. Although we've "jumpstarted" many independent car sharing organizations across the nation, we remain local - our staff lives here and knows the Bay Area. This is our home too! Every cent we make gets invested back into the community through our services and advocacy work. For example, we have:
  • The first and only wheelchair accessible car share vehicle in the nation
  • Partnered with youth organizations, such as the Bay Area Wilderness Training, to get youth outdoors for field trips
  • Pricing that is kept as low as possible to serve as many people as possible
  • Special discounts for other nonprofit organizations (nonprofits use promo code NFPB), low income residents, and students
  • Ratified (as a founder) a Code of Ethics for the car sharing industry
  • The highest level of insurance available, ensuring that members are protected, not just covered
  • Advocated for smart transportation and better land use
Whew! All of these extra efforts make us a very busy, productive and happily unique car sharing organization.

Thanks for sharing!
