Take a Load Off On Us!
In case you hadn't noticed, City CarShare loves our
unique neighborhoods. We love hearing about your
favorite eateries, streets to stroll, neighborhood
causes to support and stores to frequent. This month,
we feel compelled to highlight a venerable stalwart
of community passion
a place that defies stereotypes
and truly defines the term "neighborhood haunt".
Welcome to Woody's Laundromat.
Join us at Woody's on February 13th and get a free
laundry wash and dry on us! Our new pod at
Oakland/Lake
Merritt: 3rd Ave and East 15th is near
Woody's. So grab your detergent, your kids, your
friends and your dirty clothes, and take a load off
on us to celebrate this new pod — and don't forget to
bring your fob.
Where: Woody's Laundromat, 1841 Park Boulevard, between 18th and 19th, Oakland
When: Wednesday night, February 13th 7:00 p.m - 9:00 p.m.
Who:: You, our members and your neighborhood friends.
We know what you're thinking; "Isn't a laundromat a
boring place to celebrate a new pod?" Not so!
Woody's is the perfect place for people who need to
do laundry but don't like laundromats. A local
business with friendly employees, Woody's is a
neighborhood fixture in the Lake Merritt area. Surf
the Internet on their free wireless or enjoy the outside patio area as your laundry
spins. We found these reviews on Yelp:
"This laundromat is AMAZING! I have never had
such passion for a laundromat and am pretty
amazed that I have one still
The people in my
life can't believe I've had so much to say about
a laundromat (I think I've brought it up in
conversation no fewer than 5 times). Woody's
sparkes!
" -Felicia
"
That's the other thing — the fact that they
even have a back patio for chilling is great.
Complete with patio furniture and bamboo plants,
a little urban oasis. There's TVs showing news
and crap, but then there's a little TV for the
kids. I've watched the Ice Age and Shrek so many
times. Once a week. For like 2 years
" -Jessica
If you bring a friend who signs up during the
event, you'll both get $40 in driving credits to
share — not to mention a sack of clean clothes!

A Mom & Dad Share a Story
When we got this email a few weeks ago, we realized
we couldn't keep it to ourselves. Thanks to Susan and
David for sending in a story highlighting another
benefit to car sharing.
Hi City CarShare folks,
I thought you all might enjoy this story and how easy
it is for kids to understand how City CarShare works.
And how wonderful sharing can be.
We were taking a walk with our son, Alexander (3
years old) and our neighbors' son Henry (6 years old)
when Henry found a brand new, in the box toy car (it
was right after Christmas) on the sidewalk. Henry got
very attached to the toy and didn't want to share
with Alexander. For a few hours Alexander kept on
asking if he could share the toy. We talked with
Henry about sharing etc. (the normal parent spiel)
When suddenly Henry GAVE the car to Alexander and
said "you don't have to give it back" — Alexander
was thrilled (and I kept on saying "Are you sure
Henry?")
At which point Alexander (a 3 year old!)
said to Henry
"It's a City CarShare car" — My
husband and I just looked at each other in amazement.
Walking home, with the car in hand, Alexander again
said "It's a City CarShare car" and indicated he
wanted to share it with Henry.
So now the boys share the car — a few days at Henry’s
house
A few days at Alexander’s house.
Thanks for helping Alexander and Henry understand
what sharing is all about.
Sincerely, Susan and David

Need to Find Fun Things to do with Kids?
Many of our members who have children use City
CarShare for the mandatory demands of parenting life
- car pooling, school drop-off, visits to the
pediatrician and quick runs to the store for more
string cheese. City CarShare may be your second car
or your number one way to easily juggle kids and
errands. But parenting isn't all about the serious
duties (we hope) — what about fun?
When walking, biking or using public transportation won't
do, here is a great resource for finding and planning
car sharing outings and activities with your kids.
GoCityKids
is an insider's guide to celebrating family life in
many cities, including the Bay Area. GoCityKids gives
great kid-friendly recommendations — parks,
stores, professional services, restaurants,
babysitters, places to stay, and entertainment, among
other things.
Check it out when you need to search for after-school
activities, day camps, sports equipment, or a good
pediatrician.

City CarShare Members are Local Heroes
Last month CCS member Julie contacted us to let us
know she needed to use a pickup truck to collect and
drop off a crib and other items donated to a young
single mother on behalf of Oakland Kids
First.
Oakland Kids First is a multiracial
organization founded in 1996 that supports youth to
positively transform Oakland's schools and
communities through organizing, alliance building,
creative arts and advocacy.
Julie was prepared to pay for the trip but we wanted
to help support a great community organization.
Because Julie is a member of City CarShare, she and
her organization saved a lot of money by using our
truck instead of renting one for a full day. And
because CCS provides Julie with access to a fleet of
vehicles, we were able to easily give back to our
local community in support of a young mother and her
baby. Thanks, Julie!

Driving Tip: Find an Empty Gas Tank? Let us Know.
C.B., a CCS member for two years, is feeling a little
frustrated with some of his fellow Kezar pod
members in San Francisco. He reports the cars at his pod have
gas tanks less than half full far too often.
C.B. took the time to write us so we're taking the time
to remind all our members to fill up that tank if it's
under half full before returning the car.
We can only address the problem if you alert us in a
timely fashion. That means it's very important to email
Member
Services or call us at 415-995-8588 if your
vehicle's gas tank is below half at the start of your
reservation. We need your name, member number, date,
time, and VIN number when making a report. This allows
us to research and assign a fee to the person who did
not return the vehicle before you with at least half a
tank of gas. If our offices are closed just leave a
message. Once you've notified us please fill the tank
so the next member doesn't need to.
While we hate to do it, we charge a fee to members who
commit a car sharing faux-pas like leaving a
gas tank less than half full. These fees are designed
to remind and reinforce the ideas that we are all in
this together and inconveniencing each other is not in
the spirit of sharing (see Alexander and Henry above).

February MythBuster
Myth: People with small children do
not use car sharing.
Truth: Completely false! Many parents
use CCS for all their car needs, or as an extra car.
Car sharing works for parents, uncles & aunts,
grandparents and - well, anyone who needs to chaperone
a kid around our urban landscape. Because City
CarShare has a variety of vehicles for all types of
needs, you can forego the purchase of that SUV and
share one of our fuel efficient, urban-sized cars.
Just bring your own child car seat and install as you
would in any car. There are lots of options for ease of
transport. Check out the Berkeley
Parent's Network for tips on their "Car Seats for
the Carless" page.
CCS members must follow all California driving laws.
Please make sure your car seat is installed correctly.
Don't forget to reserve a few extra minutes to install
it. To learn more, check out Seatcheck.org
or the
NHTSA's inspection station locater.
For more
information on the laws, click here.
And remember, chauffeuring your little ones around in a
City CarShare vehicle will not only save you money, it
will also teach your children the value of sharing.
