The holidays are coming up and we've got a lot of ways to celebrate. Read on for more...
Share the Car, Share the Bag
Good-bye to plastic! Beginning November 20, large
supermarkets and chain pharmacies in San Francisco
must cease and desist in using 'eco-unfriendly'
plastic bags at the checkout counter. We love this
progressive idea. Since many of our members use CCS
to grocery shop, we are giving you an easy way to
bring your own bag to the store. In each SF car*, you
will find reusable cloth bags under (or behind) the
passenger seat. The next time you go to the store,
grab the bag, use it for your groceries and return it
to your vehicle - or any CCS car whenever you can.
If a bag is missing at your local pod, let us know
and we'll replace it.
So what's the deal with plastic bags? Here are some
facts worth pondering:
- About 180 million plastic shopping bags are distributed in San Francisco each year.
- Stores pay 2 to 3 cents for each bag. Biodegradable bags cost 5 to 10 cents each. City CarShare bags are free, reusable and biodegradable!
- 4 to 5 trillion non-degradable plastic bags are used worldwide annually. (Trillion has lots of zeros: 1,000,000,000,000)
- 430,000 gallons of oil are needed to produce 100 million non-degradable plastic bags.
The CCS bags are part of a solution to a local
environmental issue — plus we're taking the reusable
bag concept one step further: people who share
reusable bags use fewer bags, which utilizes fewer
resources in the long run. And we all love sharing,
don't we? But don't worry if you keep forgetting to
return a bag. We'll make sure the cars get
restocked.
One of our observant members already found a bag. Here's what she had to say:
"I just wanted to say that the reusable bags in the
cars is a great idea. Today was the first time I had
seen them in a car and I ended up using one. Nice
touch."
-Tiffany, member since 2005
*East Bay members, keep an eye out for
bags at your pods in the near future.

Who Doesn't Love Pie?
Although Thanksgiving is around the corner, it's
not too early to dig into a slice of tasty pie. So
join us at Mission Pie next Tuesday, November 13
from 6-8 p.m. Show your fob and get $1 off of any
piece of pie or coffee. And if you bring a friend
and they sign up with City CarShare, they'll get a
FREE piece of pie and you both get to share $40
worth of Tell-a-Friend driving credits ($20 each).
But why pie you ask? We think you deserve a treat
and we like supporting a local, community-based
organization. Thanks to our friends at Mission Pie,
you can indulge while supporting an organization that
uses pie as a way to teach city youth about
sustainable food production, farming, ecology, and
nutrition. By inviting local school groups to work on
their San Mateo Coast farm, Mission Pie helps youth
transform their relationship to food... and learn a
skill or two while they're at it.
For more
information, visit www.pieranch.org. Mission Pie is
located at 2901 Mission Street, between 25th St &
26th Street.

Driving Tip: Keep it Tidy
We all love those City CarShare members who are
seasoned experts at sharing. You know, the ones who
are considerate to the next driver. The ones who
fill up the gas tank when it's below ½ full. The
wonderful, courteous ones who always take their trash
with them. Are you one of these experts?
Take a test next time you leave a car. Did you
remember to take all of your trash with you? Give
yourself an A! Is it cleaner than when you picked the
car up? Give yourself an A+! All seriousness aside,
we do ask that you remember to remove all of your
belongings and any trash before fobbing out. Your
fellow members and neighbors will appreciate it.
Drive for less. Share more. Be green.

Generating Buzz, Sharing the Love
There are lots of Yelpers and bloggers out there,
spreading the word about City CarShare. So we thought
we'd share two with you:
Yelp: Check out what Rebekah said about us. Thanks Rebekah!
[Their] staff is really helpful. I've had issues, called it in & they've been right on it.
They're homegrown! They are based here in the Bay Area & no where else. Where is your City Pride?
They're a non profit. Your money isn't going to make someone else richer!
The cars are all pretty decent on the environment. I think all the cars for the most part get good mileage, so even if you drove as much as you used to with your old car, you would pollute less with one of their vehicles.
I HEART you City Car Share!!
Next, check out what Christopher said on his blog.
"In my short time with City CarShare, it's been easy
and affordable to get around town to run errands, pick
up friends and family at the airport, or conduct
business in cities and towns nearby San
Francisco......... there are numerous "pods" (parking
locations) to choose from, and all you need to do is
wave your member "fob" on your keychain at your
designated time - and the doors unlock, and off you go.
Gas, insurance, pod parking and maintenance are all
covered for you....."
Thanks to Rebekah, Christopher, and all the
Yelpers out there, for giving us
kudos and feedback.
We love it when people spread the word about City CarShare. So don't be shy about posting the reasons you love City CarShare on your blog or favorite social networking site!

What's New in the World of Car Sharing
City CarShare is one of the largest and oldest
independent car share organizations in North America.
While our operations are solely focused on the Bay
Area, City CarShare has helped other car share
organizations - like Philly CarShare, HOURCAR in the
Twin Cities and Austin Carshare - get started. We
provide free advice, resources and even innovative
technology.
We also have roaming partnerships with
many independent car share organizations for those
traveling members who want to car share in another
city. So, if you want to share a car while visiting
the East Coast, Midwest, Canada and even Australia,
to find out more. And we're adding more roaming partners
all the time so check out our site before checking in at
the airport.
There are currently about 30 car sharing organizations
in the US and Canada. And we talk. In October, North
American car share organizations (both independent and
larger for-profit entities) were invited to gather and
discuss the impact of car sharing. The underlying
theme was a shared commitment to provide socially
responsible car sharing in our respective communities.
To that end, the attendees agreed to adopt a Code of
Ethics and Standards of Practice. The Code's main objectives are to ensure
social and environmental commitment, customer
protection, a high standard of professional and
operational behavior, and sustainable business
practices. A first draft of the document has been
completed and once it's finalized we'll make it
available to all.
You may also have heard about the industry merger
between Zipcar and Flexcar. Our response can be read here.
