Random Acts of Sharing

-Why We Love Car Sharing: Part 1-

Last week, Jared Wilson reserved a Prius. Secure with his confirmation, he arrived at his pod on time but found no Prius in sight. Not a great start to the day, he thought, but occasionally car sharing means... sharing. Doing what any member would do, Jared called City CarShare. "We'll get right on it", we said, and promptly called the delayed member and asked him to return the car, which he did immediately with humble apologies. It was a routine mistake and, although he was now running late, Jared was about to get his car.

But the story doesn't end there. The returning member had something more important on his mind and didn't fob out. Our hero Jared couldn't start the car due to 'fob security'. Delayed... again!

So now Jared was running half an hour late. We were concerned because we do everything we can to keep the cars on schedule for our members. Jared was concerned because... well, because he has a life and car delays aren't really a part of it. Again, Jared called City CarShare and explained his situation. We adjusted the system to recognize his fob. Problem solved. Jared was free to go.

But this story doesn't end here. Again.

Sometimes City CarShare is more about 'community' than anything else. Sometimes, there are more important things on our minds than 'fobbing out.' Our humble delayed member and his wife had a sick child on their hands. When Jared learned this, he didn't think twice about putting everyone in his shared car and rushing them to a hospital. (P.S. child and family are doing fine.)

And it doesn't end here, either. It just gets better.

Jared called City CarShare again to request that we not fine the member who inconvenienced him. He didn't ask for anything but our indulgence, which we gladly gave. That's how we found out about Jared's random act of kindness. And that's a story that could only happen because of car sharing! We just had to pass it on. Thanks Jared, for Sharing the Love.

New Pods!

Even though we've opened about 35 new pods so far in 2007, we still get excited over each new addition. We know that we're making life easier for a lot more people with each new pod we add. Here are the new arrivals and the cars we plan to place in them:
  • Noe Valley: 26/Guerrero (2 Corollas)
  • Mission: Mission/19th (2 Prius hybrids)
  • Bernal Heights/Mission: Mission and Cesar Chavez (Prius hybrid and Toyota Tacoma truck)
  • Bernal Heights: Prospect and Coso (opening this week with 2 brand new Scion xDs! They are the new and improved xA model)
Coming soon: more East Bay pods. Next week, Berkeley, College/Dwight (Prius hybrid + one more car.) Stay tuned for more!

We're always looking for new spaces and follow up on every lead we have. If you know of a prime spot (and maybe even introduce us to the owner!) let us know at memberservices@citycarshare.org.

Driving tip: Jammin' Tunes

We know how it is. You get in the car with a list of errands in your head and your favorite CD. All you want to do is play it loud enough to drown out your tone-deaf singing voice. You slip it into the CD player but for some reason it doesn't...fit...exactly or... slide right in. Arghhhh! What do you do?
  • Shove it in. After all, it's a CD and you're feeding it to a CD player.
  • Pause. Stop attempting to insert the CD. Hit the eject button.
If you picked the second choice, you are correct. If you picked the first, please read on:

Nine times out of ten the reason the CD doesn't slide right in is because there's already a CD in the player. By trying to jam your CD into an already occupied player, you may ruin your CD and break the player.

On behalf of the CCS fleet team and other members - please don't do this. Be kind to the CD player and it will be kind to you. Instead, eject the CD and leave it in the car. Leave it in the car? Yes! Many members leave CDs in the cars to share music. We think this is great and many of us have been turned on to new music through CDs left by other members. It's one of the little known perks of sharing cars with neighbors.

Bay Bridge Closure - An opportunity to try a new pod

As part of the Bay Bridge Seismic Retrofit Project, the Bay Bridge will be closed in BOTH directions on Labor Day weekend from 8pm Friday, August 31 to 5am Tuesday, September 4.

If you need to get around on the other side of the Bay that weekend, please take BART, which is operating all night on some routes, or take a ferry and then pick up a CCS car once you arrive. Pods are at, or near, most BART stations in Oakland, Berkeley, El Cerrito and San Francisco. Please consider adding an additional 15 minutes or so to your reservation - just in case. Click here for more information about the closure.

August Myth Buster

Myth: City CarShare members have to join the parking queue at Trader Joe's on Masonic Avenue.

Fact: Not True!

City CarShare members have exclusive reserved parking spaces at the Trader Joe's on Masonic Avenue. These "City CarShare Only" parking spaces are located in the employee parking lot on the roof of Trader Joe's, right next to the City CarShare pod. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis to members driving a CCS vehicle.

That means you can drive around the back and onto the roof, skipping the regular Trader Joe's parking lot entirely! Just make sure you take your car when you're done shopping. After all, there may be other City CarShare vehicles parked in the same lot.

Please note: CCS has three parking spots at this location. One serves as the local neighborhood pod and the other two as CCS exclusive parking spaces. We've also changed the neighborhood description for this pod from 'Richmond' to 'Laurel Heights.' Please look for the new listing in the reservation system.

CCS Welcomes Kaiser Permanente

City CarShare and SF Kaiser Permanente have formed a partnership. Two new pods have opened on Kaiser Permanente campuses in San Francisco. In honor of its healthy lifestyles campaign, Kaiser Permanente is actively promoting use of City CarShare and other alternative transportation solutions to its employees.

Fun in the Sun, Sharing the Word

'I see your cars all the time but what is it that you do?'

That's a common question we get at community events, like last month's North Beach Jazz Festival. Even when the weather and music are great, as they were at the festival, the best part about 'tabling' is meeting friendly people who stop by to learn about us. As the local non-profit car sharing organization, our mission is to promote car sharing as both a money-saving convenient service as well as a socially responsible transportation alternative. If you see us at your local event, please stop by to say hello.

Thanks to all the member volunteers who came out to promote City CarShare at the North Beach event. Join us at these upcoming events:
  • UC Berkeley's Caltopia on August 24th & 25th
  • Oakland's Art & Soul Festival, September 1,2 and 3 (Labor Day Weekend)
To sign up for a shift, email marketing@citycarshare.org. Plus you'll get a t-shirt and driving credits for helping out!
