Things aren't always what they seem

In this "March 2007 Mythbusters" issue, we want to clarify a few details about City CarShare.

Here's the first myth:
  • Myth: City CarShare's insurance is the industry standard.
  • Fact: Not true! City CarShare has great insurance coverage
And members are noticing. Check out this letter:
Dear City CarShare folks,

I remember reading about your excellent liability coverage in one of your newsletters a while back.  I feel you should advertise this fact more onyour website and your newsletters.

Thank you for caring about your members enough to offer full liability
insurance.  That means a lot to me.

-Ziggy Tomcich, City CarShare member since 2003

Thanks Ziggy, we couldn't have said it better!  City CarShare is proud to offer excellent insurance coverage to our members and you're right: We do care!  That's why our insurance covers up to $1 million per incident.  For more myths and facts click here.

Where is the gas card?

This is a common question these days.  And a good one.  Recently we rearranged information and resources inside our cars.  The proof of insurance, registration, defect sheet and gas card are in the visor above the driver's seat.  The goal is to make it easy for you to find items within reach.  If you have questions while you're on the road, pull over and look in the glove compartment for the Quick Guide booklet.  It has information about parking issues, panel lights, running late and more.

We've got the best members!

We asked members to participate in a photo shoot and the response was so great, we couldn't take everyone up on their generous offers to help out.  Thanks to everyone who offered and participated.   We also appreciate the ongoing dedication and talent from those members who help us out in the office on a regular basis.  By helping out, you make our jobs easier and more fun.

We also occasionally hook members up with reporters and writers to tell stories and give perspectives about why they are City CarShare members.  Thanks to Martha for showing Redwood Age in Marin that baby boomers are big supporters of City CarShare.

New pods

This is one of our favorite announcements.  Check out our recent growth in these areas:
  • Parker and Hillegass, Berkeley
  • 19th and Irving
  • Magnolia and Buchanan
  • Lombard and Broderick (at the La Luna Inn)
  • 17th and Shotwell
  • Cypress and 24th
  • Valencia and 23rd
  • Van Ness and Union

Driving tip of the month: Hide the key

Are you tired of grabbing the end of the key cord in search of the key?  We've installed a handy key pouch near the ignition under the driving wheel so you can stash the key and find it again with ease.  The trick is to use it every time, so please do.

Every month we will include a driving tip in the newsletter and post them to our website.  We get many of these suggestions for tips from members, so feel free to let us know if you have any ideas for this feature. Email memberservices@citycarshare.org.

Fun in the sun and sharing the love

As summer approaches we're looking at upcoming festivals, concerts, street fairs and parades for City CarShare to be present.  Let us know if there are any events that you think would be good for City CarShare to spread the word, give out free goodies and sign up new members.  If you'd like to help us out at the table chatting with the curious, let us know.  It's a great way to get the word out and meet new people.  Email marketing@citycarshare.org for suggestions and to add your name to the event volunteer list.

City CarShare goes to school

New partnerships between City CarShare and the City College of San Francisco (CCSF)  and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) have formed.  Now both colleges have pods on-site for use by students, staff, faculty and the public.  We are pleased that CCSF and UCSF are joining our collective effort to reduce pollution and decrease the number of cars on the road while providing their students with a less expensive way to drive.

March Mythbusters continued

Myth: City CarShare does not pay for parking spaces.
Fact: City CarShare certainly does pay for parking.

In fact, this is one of our highest cost items.  Except for a few spaces that have been donated by good-hearted supporters, we pay for all of our parking spaces.  At City of San Francisco garages, we pay the carpool rate.  Unfortunately, parking prices have increased substantially over the past 18 months, since our competition has come to town.  We aren't above paying "below market rates", however, so if you know a good location that wants to give us a deal, please let us know!

Myth: City CarShare is just like the competition.
Fact: City CarShare is your local, homegrown car sharing organization.

All of our staff, customer service and support help live here.  And, as a socially responsible, non-profit organization, our only goal is to provide convenient, affordable access to cars.  By doing so, we aim to reduce individual car ownership -- and improve the environment and quality of life in our cities.  So, every dollar we make goes back into our community through our services.  And we provide the best insurance coverage, cleanest cars and lowest usage prices in the industry -- at about $6/hour for an average trip.

Myth: City CarShare is expensive.
Fact: Did you know that 90% of all trips are under 5 hours and under 60 miles?

If your trips are in this range, City CarShare is the lowest cost option available. At $4 per hour and 44 cents per mile, the average City CarShare per hour fee is under $6.  Members' average monthly bills are $30-$70.  And since off-peak pricing is as low as $2/hour, you have more low cost options for getting around town.

Myth: City CarShare has fewer "cool" cars.
Fact:  Is global warming cool?

Are large, high emission cars needed in our urban environment?   Our members say "no."  That's why City CarShare only offers cars that are at, or near, the top of their class in fuel efficiency.  We choose these cars not just to be kind to the environment, but also due to quality, function and occasionally because they're fun to drive.

Myth: City CarShare is new in the Bay Area.
Fact: False!  City CarShare was the first provider in the Bay Area.

As the original socially-responsible car sharing organization in the Bay Area, we've been serving members since 2001. With other providers now in town, we know you have a choice and we appreciate that you choose City CarShare.

Thanks for sharing,

City CarShare
