Plus, no key is required for this model. Other than that, the start up is the same; simply press the power button and the break pedal at the same time, and you’re ready to go! The first three 2010 models are at Larkin & Golden Gate (UC Hastings) and Mission & 24th Street in San Francisco and 41st& Telegraph in Oakland. More will be added soon!

Community Programs You’ll Love

Many of you joined City CarShare because you care about your community and realized you could save money while doing your part to reduce congestion and CO2 emissions. City CarShare cares as well – in fact, one of our members recently called us City CareShare. So, in the spirit of caring and sharing, we’ll continue to highlight partner organizations, businesses and causes in our newsletter. This month we give you opportunities to give, explore, learn, support local artists and…. go shopping!.

Cinema Under the Stars

Grab your blanket or lawn chair because City CarShare is sponsoring the Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema™ again this year. This fun event presents free screenings of local independent filmmakers’ works in neighborhood parks, and playgrounds to increase the exposure and recognition of local artists, and to bring the community together to enjoy our open spaces and neighborhood resources. Thanks to all Bernal Heights CCS members who are doing your part to decrease the number of privately owned cars in the beautiful hills of Bernal Heights.

This year’s festival, from October 1- 10, celebrates film with musical scores and live music performed by local musicians and composers/arrangers. The line-ups offer a collection of features, independently produced documentaries, shorts, animation, experimental and music videos - appropriate for all ages.

Celebrate San Francisco’s Architecture

This year's Architecture and the City theme Everyday Design celebrates the many smart, ingenious and unexpected ways design impacts our daily lives, unveiling the unseen hand of the designer in everything from civic and institutional works to landscaping and residential design. Programs will also explore the nuanced ways architects and designers thoughtfully impact our communities and reflect ever-important issues of sustainability.

CCS celebrates our homegrown San Francisco style everyday. That's why we're sponsoring this local event for the fourth year in a row. Please visit the Architecture and the City website to purchase tickets and to check out the events calendar.

We are giving away a pair of Home Tour tickets to the member who writes on our Facebook wall the most creative way City CarShare impacts their everyday life. Tune in to contest and event announcements, new Pods and fun links by becoming a fan on our Facebook page.

Go “Shopping!” For Project Open Hand

City CarShare is once again working with "Shopping! the Musical" to let you know about ways to give back, shop and laugh. This month, you can go shopping and help Project Open Hand! Anyone who brings two non-perishable food items (canned or boxed) to a September Friday or Saturday 8 PM performance of "Shopping! The Musical" will be able to purchase a discounted $10 ticket for that evening's performance.

Project Open Hand provides “meals with love” to thousands of Bay Area residents living with serious illnesses, HIV/AIDS, the homebound/critically ill, and seniors.

Now in its fourth hit year, "Shopping! The Musical" is the musical comedy revue about our favorite pastime. This Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle award-winning show features comedy songs and sketches about stores, customers, sales people, and all the craziness of shopping!

To obtain discounted tickets, simply bring your food items to the "Shopping!" box office - located at the Shelton Theatre, 533 Sutter Street in SF's Union Square area. Box office opens at 7 PM and tickets are subject to availability through Sept 26th. For more information, visit the "Shopping! The Musical” website.

Ride the Redwoods

For the last 21 years City CarShare member Dale Butler has been raising money for Cooperative de las Mujeres Organizadas- a women’s operated health center in Mulukuku Nicaragua. In partnership with the Women’s Empowerment Network and the Wellspring Renewal Center, Ride the Redwoods gives you a chance to get out on your bike or just relax in the Redwoods to support this incredible organization. This unique fundraiser (Sept 18-20) involves a weekend of camping, and scenic bike rides through the Mendocino Redwoods. All meals, a camping site and a charity donation are included in the $120 fee to participate. If you can’t make the Ride, please consider making a donation directly. Money raised helps to pay for staff to provide medical care, medicine, and updated facilities in Nicaragua. If you are interested in donating to Cooperative de las Mujeres Organizadas, or reserving your space on the weekend trip, please contact Dale Bulter at 415-262-1064 for more information.

Changes on the Road – CCS Plans

Beep! Beep! Here’s a heads up—starting November 1, 2009 we will be making some changes to our plans. As a nonprofit, it is our mission to keep our prices as low as possible while covering our costs, so more and more people can benefit from using a car sharing service. We will continue being the lowest cost option in the Bay Area, with the best insurance coverage anywhere and the greenest fleet available. Some prices will change and we’ll be offering new plans, new options and enhanced opportunities for flexible and socially responsible car sharing. Please stay tuned for more information.

Household Perk for YOU

Do you have an addition to your family or household? For the month of September, you can add one member to your individual or household account for FREE (waived application fee + $20 in referral driving credits). You’ll both share the same annual or monthly fee and your S.O., B.F.F. or roomie can get a turn behind the wheel for a change. To add a new member to your household account, have your friend apply online and enter the promo code "SeptPlus1" and your Member ID number.

CCS 101: Tips on Fobbing-In and Look up at the Visor

Fobbing-in: Anyone can do it

Although fobbing-in is as easy as saying Abracadabra, the wait time can vary. So here are some tips to enter and exit our vehicles.
  • Always hold the key-fob steady near the light for 5-10 seconds over the fob reader.
  • If the fob reader is blinking and the car does not unlock immediately, our system is confirming that you have a reservation. This can take up to 30 seconds. But you can make great use of this time by circling the car and checking for any damage. (If the doors do not unlock after 30 seconds, double-check that you are trying to enter the car-type you reserved at the location you selected and then give member services a call if needed.)
  • If the doors unlocked right away, you still need to circle the car to check for damage. If you miss any damage and the next driver reports it, you could be held responsible.
  • Whenever you leave the vehicle, even during your reservation, always (and only) use the key-fob to lock the car. Never use the locks on the car doors. Using the key-fob enables the vehicle’s security system and helps to prevent theft, even if culprits get into the car.
Looking for the Pod Map?

We’ve moved the pod map, instructions and phone numbers from the passenger side dashboard to the driver’s side visor. We thought it would be easier to look up from your seat rather than leaning over the passenger side to get your information. We hope you like the change. Let us know what you think.
