We ♥ The Bay Area: Goodies for Autumn? Squishy's Got 'em!

While the trees start to sprinkle our streets with their colorful confetti of fall leaves, City CarShare members are set to rake in piles of green prizes in celebration of our 10th Anniversary year. October marks the ninth month of our We ♥ the Bay Area promotion, where a routine leg on your daily trip through town could land you an unexpected armload of loot.

A stealthy squad of 10 plush Pacific Pink Octopi -- a.k.a. Squishy -- have been hidden in 10 City CarShare vehicles all around the Bay. During your next reservation, check the glove compartment. If you find a few extra tentacles hitching a ride, you've won! Each Squishy is holding a scroll with directions on how to claim your trove of locally sponsored treasure.
Good luck!

More than Affordable, A Smart Choice: Price Adjustments Coming up, November 1

As the Bay Area's only local, nonprofit carsharing organization, we work hard to keep our prices accessible to as many as we can, even in an environment of increasing gas prices, parking expenses, repair fees, and insurance premiums. And over the last two years while the economy shimmied in limbo, our prices stayed the same. As of November 1, 2011, we are making adjustments to our price structure. While driving rates will go up, we will also have cars for as little as $5 an hour. (There will be no increases or changes to our membership services fees, except for the Share-a-Little annual fee: it will be $50/year)

Our new pricing will still save you a ton of money over other services. In fact, CCS will still be 20% - 50% less than other services for comparable vehicles. We'll also continue to provide deeply discounted Night Owl Rates and Extended Freedom Trips (day rates) that have a built in discount. For standard Share plans, university, and employee benefit plan recipients, and all other personal use members, please check our website for more details here.

Although our prices have changed, we will continue to provide local, personal service, and pricing plans designed to save you money -- all while improving the environment and quality of life for Bay Area residents.

On-Street Parking, Ready for Take-Off

Valencia and 17th Pod Pic
Valencia & 17th
As City CarShare continues to stride boldly into new frontiers across the Bay Area, we recognize that responding to the needs of the carshare market holds the key to responsible growth. Around the world, other carsharing organizations have shown that our shared mission can often reach further if our fleet reaches more deeply into the neighborhoods that support us. Requests for more cars in dense neighborhoods with limited parking has led to a pilot program for Pods, in partnership with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

Announcing our newly launched on-street parking spots in five San Francisco locations:

   1. Polk & Greenwich (Russian Hill)
   2. Taylor & Pacific (Russian hill)
   3. Harriet & Howard (SOMA)
   4. Valencia & 17th (Mission)
   5. Clay & Fillmore (Lower Pacific Heights)

While we are constantly learning how to best serve you, one lesson has been clear: neighborhoods that carshare are neighborhoods that thrive. More walking, biking, and bus riding -- mobility modes we all share -- make for cleaner air and calmer streets. The bold visibility of our new on-street parking spots will not only increase accessibility for our current members, but will also highlight core carsharing neighborhoods as desirable places to live, work, and play.

As a member of City CarShare, you've already made our cars part of your overall transportation strategy along with public transit, bikes, that trusty Razor scooter (oh, trends, how we love you) and good old-fashioned foot power.  We are confident that our on-street Pods will make it even easier to get to our cars when you really need one, and maybe even bring you past a few storefronts and local gems that you've never had the chance to visit before.

City CarShare is working with the City of San Francisco on this pilot program in two phases. After the initial five spaces, we plan to launch six more on-street spaces in the upcoming months. Our target neighborhoods will be in Bayview, Dogpatch, Glen Park, Inner and Outer Sunset.

City CarShare will be leading a research and assessment effort during the pilot to learn what works, what doesn't and what we can do to improve the service. It is our hope that a successful pilot program will lead to expansion of on-street carsharing in San Francisco for us and other organizations.
Stay tuned!

If you would like to offer parking or make suggestions for new Pods (locations) or vehicle types, please e-mail us at memberservices@citycarshare.org. Our criteria for vehicles, other than being reliable and roomy, include fuel and emissions efficiency. Because our cars are driven a lot more than an average car owners' wheels, having cars with a lower carbon impact is an especially important consideration for City CarShare.

Everybody's Perfect PARK(ing) Day = Java in Hand + Grass Underfoot

Joining over 200 groups worldwide for one spirited day of peaceful revolution, City CarShare celebrated PARK(ing) Day 2011 by transforming slab of urban drab into a petite green park.

Nestled next to bike parking in front of Four Barrel Coffee, City CarShare's lawn lounge gave passersby a chance to break away from their huge looming deadlines and tiny flashing screens to stretch out beneath the big, blue sky. Nothing dissolves workweek stress like teaching your co-workers that his tiger-shaped cloud is so obviously a T-Rex (and no, there isn't an app for that).

PARK(ing) Day photo Check out photos from this year's PARK(ing) Day on our Facebook page!

Ignited in 2005 by local art and design studio, Rebar, the original PARK(ing) Day installment featured a swath of sod, a potted tree and a homey wooden bench placed over the asphalt of one metered parking stall for just two hours. When the meter expired, the Rebar team simply rolled up the turf and cars rolled back in; and yet, their daring display of urban greening quickly swept the web as city dwellers around the world felt the power of PARK(ing) Day's message.

City CarShare has participated in PARK(ing) Day SF since 2007. We are increasingly encouraged by the sight of more and more pop-up parks each year, making the statement for sustainability that our members make each day.

We would like to raise a toasty roast to our friends at Four Barrel for their smiles, their support, and their single-handed role in making our park the most heavenly-scented slice of green in town.

SFMOMASFMOMA

Founded in 1935, SFMOMA was the first West Coast museum devoted to showcasing modern and contemporary art. A champion of art that is both innovative and challenging within its historic and cultural contexts, the SFMOMA curators continuously exhibit and collect work by both modern masters and younger, less-established artists.

The museum strives to engage the community by making both art and artistic expression accessible to all audiences. Located just a short walk from downtown San Francisco, the SFMOMA landmark building can be spotted blocks away by its signature turret and oculus skylight. Read more about the museum's history and discover current and upcoming exhibits here.

IKEIke's Place
A San Francisco original, Ike's Place opened its doors on Halloween of 2007. Since then, this favorite neighborhood joint has been serving up its tricked-out treats to die-hard fans of the West Coast sandwich. Always hot and fresh, owner Ike Shehadeh (oh, did you think we were still talking about the menu?), puts customer satisfaction first, last, and on every layer in between. From baked-to-order bread to the infamous "dirty sauce" that caresses every warm roll with extra flavor, Ike's wants you happy. Period.

Check out the extensive menu and the history behind Shehadeh's creative genius here

shoetoteThe Shoe Tote
The Shoe Tote comes in two sizes and has two compartments (one for each shoe) so your bag, its contents, and your shoes are protected from scuffs, scratches, and dirt. Designed for everyday commuting and traveling, The Shoe Tote is conveniently sized to fit inside a purse, gym bag or suitcase and can be configured multiple ways as a separate tote.

Created by a public transit veteran (long-time BART, MUNI and Caltrain user!), The Shoe Tote was designed with people like City CarShare members in mind to eliminate damaged shoes and abused work-bags. Click here to find out how to snag a bag.
