Smiles Ahead of the Pack: Bay Area Leads Country in Private Vehicle Sharing

Some might call it "Car Sharing 2.0". For us, it's just a natural next step along our innovative path toward smarter mobility. On January 1, 2011, a new law goes into effect (AB 1871 for you trivia buffs) that will catalyze a change in the way we all view car ownership. That 'next step' is personal vehicle sharing.

Personal Vehicle Sharing (or person-to-person sharing) allows car owners to place their own car into a car sharing fleet for use by others. The car owner earns a bit of cash and we all get to share another vehicle. The net impact is fewer cars being produced, more locations provided, more people being served, and a new way to keep costs low as we grow.

But what about that legislation? AB 1871 removes some hairy insurance hurdles that once denied coverage to private vehicle owners who wanted compensation for sharing their cars with others. In effect, this law enables personal vehicle sharing - car owners can now share their car with all of you, get paid for doing so, and everyone is insured if an accident occurs.

City CarShare is proud to partner with local game-changer, Spride, in the launch of a pilot program that allows our forward-thinking members to show the rest of the nation what a positive impact car-sharing can have on civic congestion, the environment and quality of life. Beginning immediately, we'll have Spride Share vehicles in our fleet under our new pilot demonstration program. Some cars will be at set locations and some will 'float' a bit ... sometimes available at one location (e.g. BART) and other times in a neighborhood near you.

Our first vehicle is a Toyota Highlander Hybrid, a super low emission vehicle (SLEV) and the most fuel-efficient 6 passenger vehicle available. Your reservation of the Highlander, and any future Spride vehicle, will be covered under our excellent $1 million per incident insurance policy. You can feel just as secure driving a Spride/City CarShare vehicle as you would any of the other cars in our fleet.

Share the good news! For those friends and co-workers whose lifestyles require owning a car, you can now have a conversation about City CarShare that doesn't end with, "Dude, I need my car, ok?!?" Even for car owners who have a daily commute to contend with, the average private auto sits idle for 90% of its lifespan. Through Spride, a car owner gets to put their personal vehicle into our network of shared vehicles in exchange for cold hard cash and warm karma fuzzies. For more information on how to add a car to the mix, please visit www.spride.com.

Grammy® Winning Girl Power

When that thick autumn fog starts to roll in from the Bay, not even your trusty North Face fleece can fend off the chill. Luckily for us, the red-hot talent of the San Francisco Girls Chorus is ready to warm our hearts from the inside out with a thrilling new concert season debuting this month.

For more than thirty years, the gifted young women of the San Francisco Girls Chorus have inspired audiences across the globe, from Beijing's Forbidden City to President Barack Obama's White House. Earlier this year, the Chorus won its fourth and fifth Grammy® Awards for Mahler's Eighth Symphony with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony. No longer just a branch of the prestigious San Francisco Opera, the San Francisco Girls Chorus has secured its status as an internationally celebrated professional choral ensemble.

The San Francisco Girls Chorus is celebrating its 2010-2011 series with concerts on both sides of the Bay. To get a taste of this homegrown national treasure while they're in season, order your tickets via City Box Office at 415-392-4400 or visit www.cityboxoffice.com.

As a City CarShare nonprofit member and partner organization, we've got tickets to share with members. What sounds classier than pulling up to a concert in a cherry red Mini Cooper? Not much! City CarShare is excited to offer five lucky members a pair of tickets to enjoy San Francisco at its cultural best. For your chance to win, tell us who your favorite female singer is by sending an e-mail no later than October 15 to marketing@citycarshare.org*.

The Ones That Got Away...

When was the last time you got paid to go wine-tasting in Napa? Or camping with the kids? What about whale watching?

If you were one of the hundreds of wallet-savvy City CarShare members who took advantage of our 2010 Summer Getaway Promo, your answer might be, "just last month!" This year, City CarShare gave away free driving credits to members who used two or more Extended Freedom Trips to enjoy the glorious, if somewhat foggy, weather of our Indian summer. As we sorted through your receipts, we had a great time seeing the many ways in which our members "shared the love" with local businesses.

If you missed out on the fun this year, it's never too late to start planning for the next! If you took part in the Summer Getaway and haven't emerged quite yet from your bliss bubble, by all means enjoy the afterglow as long as you can! Just make sure to dig out those receipts and send them our way before October 15 so that we can credit your account. Trips needed to be taken by September 30 for this campaign. For more details go to www.citycarshare.org/getaway.do.

Receipts for the local business you patronized can be scanned and e-mailed to marketing@citycarshare.org.

Alternatively, you can mail or fax your receipts to us at:

We Came, We Sod, We Conquered!

Okay, maybe "conquered" is a little strong, but on PARK(ing) Day 2010, City CarShare members proudly challenged the auto-cracy of the San Francisco streets.

In partnership with the Neighborhood Parks Council, City CarShare transformed a metered parking space into a temporary oasis from the workday blues. Volunteers helped to lay down sod and arrange potted plants to create the ultimate urban green space where anyone could join us for a few hours of relaxation and good old-fashioned neighborhood bonding.

Since the first pop-up park was created in 2005 by REBAR, (PARK)ing Day has found dedicated citizen activists in over 140 cities and 21 countries around the world. The premise is simple, yet powerful: Don't just talk the talk. Build awareness of the lack of open public space in our cities by creating it peacefully ... and the support of the community is undeniable.

Find out more about the history of (PARK)ing Day and how you can take part in the cause at: www.parkingday.org.

Would You Like a Side of Droids™ With That Blackberry™?

Every year, Americans feed the planet a giant gadget smoothie that includes over 130 million cell phones, many of which are still functional and all of which can be recycled. To counter this toxic disaster-diet, the team at MokuGift, a San Francisco-based social venture, created a free cellular recycling program that makes environmental responsibility as easy as walking to the post office. Since April 2010, City CarShare members have recycled 55 cell phones under the Plant My Phone program.

And that's not all, folks! For every cell phone that is recycled, MokuGift plants at least one tree through the Billion Tree Campaign led by the United Nations Environment Programme. While the program accepts all phone brands for recycling, certain smartphones help to plant more than one tree. City CarShare's grand total? Eighty-five leafy, carbon-dioxide munching trees ... are you number 86?

So you want in on the action but just got your paws on the brand new iPhone? No problem! Plant My Phone has launched a pledge program that gives eco-conscious citizens the power to plant new trees just by promising to recycle their shiny new phones when they're no longer shiny or new.

To sign your pledge and exercise City CarShare's green thumb, visit www.plantmyphone.com/partner/city-carshare.

If you have an old phone you'd like to recycle now, stop by the City CarShare office to pick up a FREE mailer bag, or look in our vehicles. As a bonus, every phone you recycle automatically enters you into a monthly drawing for $1,000--that's a lot of rollover minutes!

Help us spread the word! The next time you tweet out what you had for breakfast, consider sending a byte to your friends about how they can keep Mother Earth in her skinny jeans (LOL).
