Rate Change Work Ahead: Please Read!
Sometimes, redundancy is a good thing. While it may be a bother to hear it again and again, we so rarely
make rate changes, we want to be sure that the changes coming are no surprise. As a committed member of
the only Bay Area nonprofit car sharing service, you receive the most reliable, most environmentally
friendly and, still, the most affordable service available. Beginning on November 1st, our driving rates
for individual and household accounts will include an increase in hourly rates and a decrease in the
mileage fee. In order to keep your total cost as low as possible, weekday rates will be lower than
weekend rates. As a member, you should have received a letter or email by now (we sent it to the same
address that we send your bill) describing your particular plan's changes. Please contact us if you did
not get this message. For standard Share plans, university and employee benefit plan recipients, please
check our website for more details at http://www.citycarshare.org/ratesandsavings.do.
As a green, nonprofit car share provider, we work hard to keep our prices accessible to you, even in an
environment of increasing gas prices, parking costs and insurance premiums. We will continue to provide
local, personal service and pricing plans designed to save you money—all while improving the
environment and quality of life for Bay Area residents.
If you have any questions about our membership policies, please see our handbook. You can download it
here and always find an up-to-date version on our log-in page.

Building Community by Sharing Land
This month City CarShare is partnering with the San
Francisco Community Land Trust (SFCLT) to share with you an innovative program to boost home
ownership among low income residents. We know that supporting smart growth and housing leads to increased
use of environmentally conscience transportation—including car sharing and public transit. By
supporting affordable housing programs, City CarShare extends its services to more of your neighbors and
the broader community.
The SFCLT is a membership-based organization whose mission is to create permanently affordable,
resident-controlled housing for low to moderate-income people in San Francisco through community
ownership of the land. The SFCLT takes land off the speculative market and works with diverse voices to
preserve working-class communities.
SFCLT's program brings together those who lack housing security to form housing cooperatives through
which the current residents share ownership of the residential co-op and the SFCLT maintains ownership of
the land. The SFCLT depends on its grassroots membership base for input, leadership and financial
support. You can be part of the movement by joining SFCLT for only $24 a year. When you join by
clicking here as an extra bonus for being active in your community you will
also receive a 10% discount on all purchases at Modern Times Books.

New Pods: Look Up?
That's right. Unfortunately no flying cars have been added to our fleet yet (stay tuned for 2050), but
this month we expanded to two new high-rise residential developments. Adding car sharing to urban
developments helps reduce the need for parking, making available more space that can be used for housing.
It also encourages residents to use public transit, which promotes cleaner air, and ultimately saves
residents money by eliminating parking and car ownership costs. Do you know of a new development or
apartment building we should add car sharing too? Let us know at memberservices@citycarshare.org.

Saving the Bay - Watch on KQED/KTEH Beginning Thursday
From the Gold Rush to the Golden Gate Bridge, through World's Fairs and World Wars; from Alcatraz and
Angel Island to ferry boats and foghorns, the San Francisco Bay has been central to the identity of one
of the world's leading economic, academic, recreational and cultural regions. As a Bay Area resident
wouldn't you like to know more about how it has morphed into this one of a kind region we call home?
Narrated by Robert Redford, follow the storied history of San Francisco Bay with
Saving the Bay, a four-hour documentary series premiering on KQED. Saving the Bay is a
co-production of Ron Blatman and KQED/KTEH Public Television. It will air on October 8th and 15th
from 8 - 10 p.m. (repeating overnight and Sundays October 11th and 18th noon - 2 p.m.). The series will also
run on KTEH four successive Thursday evenings starting October 22nd through November 12th from 9-10 p.m.
If you are a Twitter or
Facebook friend
of City CarShare, some special give-aways will be available for those of you who love the Bay like we do.
Sign up if you aren't already a member. And while you're at it, please help us thank the Metropolitan
Transportation Commission and the Bay Area Toll Authority, for co-sponsoring the documentary, along with
other various agencies and foundations. For additional information, visit

PARK(ing) to Promote Green Space
As a City CarShare member you get around while making a statement. Together we are improving the
environment and making our communities more livable by taking thousands of cars off the streets and
reducing congestion. By owning fewer cars, you are taking up less space in our Bay Area cities, leaving
more space for urban planners to make smart, money-saving land use decisions.
As urban dwellers, we all need a place to throw down a blanket and soak up the sun. On PARK(ing) Day,
held this year on September 18th, the nation saw firsthand what our cities would look like if we swapped
out some asphalt with green space. This year City CarShare teamed up with the Neighborhood Parks Council
(NPC) to create a coffee lounge/bocce lawn in Linden Alley. A special thanks to
Tazi Designs and Zonal for letting us borrow
furniture for the day and to Friends of the Urban Forest for loaning us trees.
NPC and CCS staff and volunteers had a lot of fun making the case for more green space on PARK(ing) Day.
Through bocce, sharing the word and relaxing on our temporary lawn with many people who were simply
passing by, we celebrated existing parks and promoted the need for more green space in America's cities.
If you would also like to make a case for more livable space, support NPC and
City CarShare in our efforts to improve the quality of life in
our communities.
CCS also supported C.C. Puede's PARK(ing) Day's space in the Mission by donating driving credits for them
to use in setting up their space. This great group used their space for a BBQ and to build a clinic where
a doctor and nurse volunteered to provide free health care to attendees, which included local day
laborers.
With 345,000 on street parking spaces available in SF (including spaces with meters), the 37 PARK(ing)
Day spaces used in San Francisco represented .01% of the available spaces—and with only 5 PARK(ing) Day
spaces used in Oakland, this campaign packed a big message into very little space. For more information
about PARK(ing) Day, organized by Rebar, go to http://www.parkingday.org/.

Market Street, SF Eastbound Closure
Last Tuesday, Sept 29th marked the start of San Francisco's six week pilot program aimed at reducing
eastbound traffic on Market Street. The new program forces private vehicles traveling eastbound to turn
at Eighth Street and Sixth Street or face fines. The street will not be fully closed: eastbound
pedestrians, cyclists, transit, delivery vehicles, and taxis will be able to access Market Street past
Sixth Street towards downtown. Also, there are no restrictions on westbound traffic. The goals of this
pilot program are to free up downtown congestion and promote pedestrian and automotive safety. For more
information, view the map of changes from the MTA.

East Bay Urban Bicycle Safety Classes
Remember when your mom used to say "Safety First"? Even though it's been decades since you outgrew
your training wheels, you may not know all the tricks and tips to safely navigate Bay Area roads. That's
why we're pleased to let you know about the East Bay Bicycle Coalition's (EBBC)
Free bicycle safety classes throughout Alameda County. Each two-day Traffic Safety 101 class series
consists of a 3.5 hour Classroom Workshop and a 6.5 hour Road Class of on-bike instruction. If your time
is limited, you can always sign up for the Classroom Workshop and complete the Road Class later. The EBBC
encourages you to take both classes to become that bike savvy master of your dreams, and will be giving
out complimentary bike lights upon completion of both classes.
