(Park)ing with a Grassroots Twist
On September 19th [also known as PARK(ing) Day] the nation saw firsthand what our cities would look like if we swapped out some asphalt with green space. City CarShare teamed up with the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research (SPUR) to create one of the 450 temporary parks, located in parking spaces, across the country. Our park, assembled in front of SPUR’s upcoming Urban Center, featured a bocce ball court, a library with urban planning books and enough green space for a picnic lunch.
As a City CarShare member, you are making our communities more livable. By using alternative transit, you are helping to remove hundreds of cars off the streets. While you may not know it, you are helping our cities make smart, practical money-saving land use decisions since less parking is needed in our neighborhoods. That’s one reason why our partnership with SPUR makes sense. SPUR advocates for better public transportation, including car sharing, and vibrant cities through smart urban development practices.
SPUR and CCS staff and volunteers had a lot of fun making the case for more green space on Park(ing) day. Through bocce, sharing the word and relaxing on our temporary lawn with many people who were simply passing by, we celebrated existing parks and promoted the need for more green space in America’s cities. If you would also like to make a case for more livable space, support SPUR and City CarShare in our efforts to improve the quality of life in our communities. |

Back it Up…Slowly!
A scratch here, a dent there. These can all add up and ultimately leave our cars looking like they got into a fight at the car wash. We’ve found that our cars mostly get these marks when members enter and exit parking spaces. As you know, tight parking spaces come hand-in-hand with living in an urban environment. We know that driving an unfamiliar car can seem like an extreme challenge from a reality T.V. show.
So the next time you are maneuvering into or out of a space, please be mindful of your surroundings and take it nice and slow. If it’s a particularly tight spot, remember to fold in the side mirrors. By tucking in the side mirrors it’ll be easier to get out of that extra cozy spot. You’ll be on your way in no time and our cars will thank you for the smoother ride. And because we’ll have to put less money into fixing our cars, we’ll be able to keep our prices at the lowest level in the car sharing industry. |
Spare the Air Partnership
City CarShare is thrilled to partner with the Spare the Air Program to improve the quality of life and environment in the Bay Area. Our mission of providing convenient, affordable access to shared cars, to reduce miles driven goes hand-in-hand with Spare the Air’s vision to reduce air pollution.
As a City CarShare member who already walks, bikes, takes public transportation and uses a car only when these alternatives won’t do, you are already making clean air choices and reducing pollution.
Discover how important it is to only use a car when absolutely necessary, as all CCS members do, by visiting the Spare the Air website. Then pat yourself on the back as you read frequently asked questions about air pollution, descriptions of its health effects, information about how various communities and employers are working to prevent pollution and clean air tips. You can also sign up to get Spare the Air advisories. |
