Car Sharing Evolves with Personal Vehicle Sharing
Let's face it. Even though City CarShare's model of 'green' car sharing reduces CO2 emissions and helps people save hundreds of dollars each
month over the cost of owning a car, not everyone is a member. While car sharing has grown here in the Bay Area, there are still a lot of
people who own one or more cars due to their lifestyle, work commute, or lack of access to car sharing. And most of these personally owned
cars are only used for an hour or so each day.
That's why City CarShare is working to move car sharing to the next level. We want to bring car sharing to new communities and give people a
reason to get rid of their second car. We also want to reduce the need to purchase a new car by making car sharing more accessible and
affordable.
To that end, please welcome Personal Vehicle Sharing.
Personal vehicle sharing (also known as person-to-person car sharing) will allow car owners to share their privately-owned vehicle with a
car sharing network, such as City CarShare. For you, our member, this means access to more vehicles in more areas - especially regions
where car sharing has not been implemented. It means a seldom-used vehicle (verified for cleanliness and safety) can now be part of the
solution, helping to reduce congestion and emissions. And it means keeping the cost of sharing down so that City CarShare usage fees stay as
low as possible.
City CarShare is proud to partner with a new company called Spride, which is developing the concept of personal
vehicle sharing. We have also worked with Assemblymember Dave Jones to introduce legislation that removes an insurance barrier to personal
vehicle sharing while guaranteeing that you will always be covered by insurance, no matter who owns the car. Assembly Bill 1871 will allow
individual car owners to participate in car sharing fleets without invalidating their own insurance. If the bill passes, the owner maintains
their own insurance for their driving, while City CarShare and Spride provide the insurance for you, our member, when driving the vehicle.
Together, the combination of good government (Dave Jones), private enterprise (Spride) and nonprofit social responsibility (City CarShare)
is evolving car sharing.
If you like the idea, please take a moment to let your representatives in the California legislature know you support AB 1871.

Get Rolling on Bike to Work Day!
A car share provider asking you not to drive? Well, City CarShare is not your typical car share organization. As a mission-based
organization, we encourage you to only use cars when other transportation options like biking, walking, and public transit will not work for
your trip.
On Thursday, May 13th we hope you join thousands of work-bound bicyclists for Bike to Work Day. If you are a newbie bicyclist, this is a
great day to jumpstart a biking routine alongside lots of other new and experienced cyclists. Pedal by any of the 200 morning or afternoon
Energizer Stations so cheerful folks can fuel you up with drinks and snacks. At select locations bike doctors will also be on hand,
providing free bike maintenance.
Did you know that door-to-door biking is often quicker than driving or taking the bus? That's right, one big benefit of biking is
predictability- since you bypass most traffic your commute time stays consistent. As an added perk you will have a zero-emission commute
while fitting in some exercise.
New to biking? Consider taking one of the East Bay Bicycle Coalitions's or
San Fransicso Bicycle Coalitions's free bicycle safety classes for cyclists of all
ages.
Visit the official Bike to Work Day (BTWD) site to get maps and information on region-wide events for the
best bicycling day of the year.
Ways to Get Involved:

bike enthusiasts) between 6:30 am - 9:30 am at the Oakland City Hall Plaza.

Bike Racks for Summer & New Additions
With summer around the corner, we are swapping out our ski racks for bike racks on our Subaru Outbacks (Pacific & Polk, Market & Buchanan
and University & MLK). Each bike rack can hold two bikes and the racks are equipped with locks to secure your wheels.
Yes, we do listen to you. At your request, we are adding new Mazda 5 Minivans to our fleet beginning in May. These city-sized minivans
hold up to 6 passengers but can fit into the same space as a compact car. We especially love the 5-star safety rating and flexible storage
capacity. Most of all, we love the fact that the Mazda 5 has the best fuel efficiency of any other minivan (....better than most standard
cars) in the market. Let us know on our Facebook wall what you think of our new additions.

Driving Tip: Sharing the Road with Cyclists
As we celebrate Bike to Work Day this month, remember that bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers.
With bicycling in the Bay Area growing in popularity, there are four easy things you can do to keep streets safe, healthy, and happy for everyone.
Look twice for oncoming cyclists before you open a door into traffic on either side of your car.
Watch for bicyclists on your right when you are making a right turn. Turn and look out your windows rather than just using your mirrors.
Give extra space between your car and the cyclist when passing.
Avoid following cyclists too closely. You must give yourself time to react if they change their movement or fall.
