We ♥ the Bay Area and We ♥ our Members

Has it been ten years already? It seems like just a few years have passed since we introduced the Bay Area to 7 green Volkswagen bugs for all to share. Since 2001 we've learned and grown together with our members. And that means our achievements are yours as well. So we've come up with a fun way to honor members, celebrate Bay Area local businesses, and congratulate you all for helping to save over 225 million pounds of CO2 emissions.

We considered hiding cake and ice cream in every car, but we think we came up with something much more practical—hidden prizes! As part of our 10th anniversary festivities, we will be hiding 10 certificates in 10 different cars each month for the next 10 months.

The first 10 winning certificates will be available in our fleet in February. Each member who finds a certificate hidden in the glove compartment during his or her reservation will receive a trove of goodies sponsored by local businesses. At the end of the year, we will be awarding a grand prize to one member. Thank you for being a part of our success and we hope you get lucky this month—with finding one of our tickets, of course!

Inside the Prize: February's Goodies:
  • Fox and Moon Teas - 3 Fox and Moon Tea blends (1 ounce each), a tea cup soy candle, 3 ounces of Creed honey-spiced walnuts, and a sampler of Brimstone Tea caramels
  • Rasayan Center - voucher for 2 free classes at their yoga studio
  • Green Box Top Deals - voucher for one free deal good from February to June 2011
  • $10 in City CarShare driving credits

Be Fob-vious When Entering Private Garages

Flashing your pearly whites might gain you entrée to the latest Mission hotspot, but when it comes to accessing the City CarShare pods inside secured buildings and garages, the key to getting in is, well, the key to getting in. Your sleek gray key fob identifies you quickly and clearly as a City CarShare member who has permission to enter a restricted resident/parking area. For conscientious tenants and residents who live or work near these pods, this knowledge is essential in ensuring that they feel safe. Please always remember to use your fob each time you enter a special-access garage, even if someone else is already entering or exiting the building. In turn, you are much more likely to get a friendly wave and a smile rather than a suspicious glance.

Gift Memberships - Something For Everyone

Finding the right gift for the people who bring your life joy is never easy. This spring, show those you care the most about how great it is to share with a City CarShare membership. Your gift will be practical, thoughtful, affordable, and with a fleet ranging from cherry-red Mini Coopers to trail-ready Subaru Outbacks, there's a car for every task and taste. One Year + Driving Credits: ShareLocal
If you know your friend's MUNI habits include a weekly Trader Joe's run and a volunteering gig across town twice a month, you can also give the gift of a one-year ShareLocal membership. For $90, your lucky pal will receive a full year of membership and the CCS member perks that come with it. Your gift, valued at $180, covers the ShareLocal membership fees for one-year ($120), the initial City CarShare application fee ($30), as well as $30 in driving credits.

Already a Member? Give the Gift of Driving Credits
What if you and your friends are so tuned-in that there's already a City CarShare fob dangling from everyone's keys? First off, that's awesome! Second, you can now purchase driving credits in any denomination for any active City CarShare member. Credits can be purchased for any type of personal use plan, and you'll know how much your gift is appreciated when you see the pictures from their day trip to Tahoe.

Add a Member to your Account for Free
Finally, if giving a full membership doesn't quite fit your budget or your roommate's lifestyle, February is your month to ease them into the City CarShare community for free! Through the end of February 2011, you can add your partner or housemate to your existing Share Plan free of charge by skipping the application fee. And remember, unlike other services, there is no additional monthly or yearly fee for your new account member.

SF Green Film Fest Spotlights Electric Vehicles

The world is abuzz over electric vehicles (including the 30 we're planning to add to our fleet), and there will be plenty of fresh energy generated on the red carpet at the San Francisco Green Film Festival, a first-of-its-kind cinematic showcase focused on environmental issues across the globe. From March 3-6, the SFGFF will premiere over 40 films throughout the Bay Area, including award-winners and audience favorites from Sundance, Berlin SXSW, Toronto, Telluride, Venice and Tribeca.

On the closing night of the festival, the curtain will open on the thought-provoking film, The 4th Revolution: Energy Autonomy, a project the Vancouver International Film Festival recognized as "... possibly the most inspirational, solutions-based environmental film out there." The film examines the global trajectory of renewable energies and delves deeply into the production of electric vehicles in the USA and Europe. The 4th Revolution demonstrates the tremendous opportunities that will be provided by the energy revolution. The audience of the closing night screening will also be treated to a premiere of the upcoming film The Death of the Electric Car, which will debut in selected theatres in March 2011.

We'll be posting details on how to win free tickets to select films throughout the festival, including the closing night headliner on Facebook, so if you haven't liked us yet, please do!

Carsharing Industry Forms International Association

City CarShare is proud to be a founding member of the newly launched international CarSharing Association (CSA), a green dream team of eighteen carsharing organizations from around the world that share our vision to effect change through socially responsible practices. Together, the CSA member organizations represent over 100,000 active members worldwide.

Working under the premise that "carsharing is a reliable and flexible alternative to car ownership," the CSA was founded to maximize the environmental and social impact of the carsharing industry. While the concept of carsharing has been around for half a century, it is only within the past decade that the service has become popular in cities around the globe.

Members agree to work with each other to focus on environmental impact and social benefits, education, research, and ethical practices. Long-term goals include reducing the number of cars on the road, relieving congestion, improving urban land use, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and augmenting transportation options at a lower cost than owning a car. By adhering to the Carshare Industry's Code of Ethics, member organizations commit to prioritizing community benefit over profits.

As a member, you know that City CarShare is all about building smarter cities through socially responsible carsharing practices. With this CSA official launch, we have raised the bar for the carshare industry's standards and practices from Australia to Nova Scotia, the USA to Brazil.

Fox and Moon Tea, continued
In the expert hands of owner Zo Guthrie, the aromas of Fox and Moon Tea's artisan teas unfurl gracefully in your cup as you sip, savor and learn your way through 5,000 years of tea history.

Fox and Moon Tea has been a local treasure since 2003, providing catered teas, focused tea tastings and educational tea events to the Bay Area community. Each tea variety featured at Fox and Moon Tea is hand-selected from esteemed tea masters based on quality and flavor profile, and an emphasis is placed on organic varietals whenever possible. Seasonal harvests are also brewed throughout the year for peak flavor.

Whether you are in search of an elegant gift for clients and customers or simply wish to discover a new blend for yourself, Fox and Moon Tea looks forward to working with you to plan a unique and memorable gathering that will delight your pals and invigorate your palate.
About the Owner
Owner Zo Guthrie was raised in Sonoma County. Her family taught her to appreciate the artistry of food and drink as she helped host dinner and wine tasting parties that featured local fare. Her early teas were a staple of commonly found English-style tea blends accompanied by a secret family scone recipe, which she served unfailingly to friends and relatives when they visited. That's Zo on the right sourcing tea at the Wuyishan tea fields in Fujian Province, China.
In 2000, her world of tea opened up with a bang as she sipped her first Oolong with a friend. This was the start of a journey to drink the world's fines teas and share them with others. Zo is a long time resident of San Francisco and relies on City CarShare to transport her tea to where it needs to be.

Rasayan Center, continued
Located in SF's financial district, the Rasayan Center offers invigorating classes on kundalini yoga by KRI certified instructors. About the Owners
Frugal, flexible and fabulously fun—that's Lynn (right) and Michelle (left), co-founders of Green Box Top. Attend one of their mood-lifting yoga classes at the Rasayan Center in San Francisco or sign up to receive Green Box Top's weekly deals for the best of the Bay's eco-centric goods and services.
