Is Bike Sharing a Good Fit for SF?
Sometimes there is nothing like a bike. Gliding on a lazy afternoon, "racing up" Mt. Tam
and even commuting past congested traffic. What if everyone had shared access to a bike,
whenever they needed one, at locations throughout San Francisco? Last Sunday, City CarShare and
the SFMTA, in partnership with BIXI of Montreal, brought a bicycle sharing equipment
demonstration to San Francisco. Stationed in Golden Gate Park, we encouraged people to
take test rides and surveyed park visitors on their interest and desire to bring bike
sharing to San Francisco. Our goal: build awareness, educate and help initiate dialog
regarding the opportunity to bring bike sharing - in a big way - to the Bay Area.
We love the idea of reducing the need for automobiles and driving. Bike sharing may be one
of the solutions that helps all of us build a more vibrant Bay Area, reducing the need to
drive while creating a healthy alternative for getting around. Let us know what you think
about bike sharing by answering our online survey. If you are interested
in staying in touch about bike sharing, please sign up to City CarShare's bike share updates
list by emailing marketing@citycarshare.org or bicycle@sfmta.com.
Thanks to everyone who came out to take a spin and share their opinion! CCS member since
2005, Nancy M. won $25 in driving credits for stopping by.

Neighborhood Parks Council
Did you know that car sharing can reduce the need for parking, freeing up space for housing,
walkable streets and parks? And who doesn't love open green areas, ball fields and
playgrounds? City CarShare certainly does. That's why CCS has teamed up with the Neighborhood
Parks Council (NPC), a San Francisco nonprofit working to ensure that our SF
communities have world-class open spaces for all to enjoy. The NPC works with the community and
public agencies to maintain our local parks so we can all benefit from the countless social,
physical and environmental assets associated with our precious green spaces.
The NPC invites you get involved with their work. We took them up on this offer when we
volunteered to pitch in and make the Bay Area a more beautiful place to live. Last month, the NPC
hooked us up with the SF Recreation & Parks Department. CCS employees spent a day cleaning up
and landscaping the Fulton Children's Playground in Golden Gate Park. Our day of service made
it possible for park staff to catch up on roughly 2 years of maintenance. We were all
smiles, knowing our efforts contributed to a cleaner, safer park for the hundreds of children
who play there daily.
If you want to volunteer at a local a park, click on your city below to get involved. If
your company is looking for a volunteer project, this is a great way to get some fresh air
and bond with colleagues.
You are also invited to join the NPC for their annual gala taking place on September 11 at 1 Fort
Mason. The evening will be a "Celebration of Green" to toast the NPC's accomplishments for
supporting San Francisco's beautiful parks.

Member Highlight: Indie Abundance Tour
Chantelle Tibbs, Deborah Crooks and Emily Bonn, three San Francisco based independent
musicians, recently formed Indie Abundance: Music, Money & Mindfulness(TM),
a music and education initiative that combines gigs at
music venues with live and online video workshops to demonstrate the tips and tools they
employ to thrive as artists. Their goal is to inspire greater social, economic and
cultural participation by artists within their communities.
The artists use City CarShare to get to shows and rehearsals.
They will kick off their Northwest tour with a free live performance and BBQ party at El
Rio, at 1pm on August 30 in SF, featuring raffle prizes (including a CCS membership) and
great food. The team is making their Indie Abundance Toolkit, featuring free music downloads

CCS Sponsors Architecture and the City Festival
Once again, September 1- 30 marks the sixth annual Architecture and the City Festival. The
month long celebration is organized by the American Institute of Architects, SF chapter (AIA
San Francisco) and the Center for Architecture + Design.
As the nation's largest architectural festival showcasing home tours, behind the scenes
tours, walking tours, films, exhibitions, lectures, dining by design, family programs and
more, Architecture and the City provides an opportunity for individuals, design practices,
companies, cultural institutions and the general public to celebrate San Francisco's unique
built environment and their contribution towards it.
The 2009 festival theme celebrates the many smart, ingenious and unexpected ways design
impacts our daily lives, unveiling the unseen hand of the designer in everything from civic
and institutional works to landscaping and residential design. Participants will also explore
the way architects and projects thoughtfully impact our communities and reflect issues of
sustainability.
For complete details on the festival, visit www.aiasf.org/archandcity.

August Driving Tip: Cushion Your Trip
We all know the words "driving in the Bay Area" and "punctuality" may not flow
truthfully when used in a sentence together. Arriving back on time means having the car back in the
pod and fobbing out by the end of your reservation time. We recommend adding some "cushion"
to your schedule by booking an extra 15 minutes to your trip. With an hourly rate of $5 and
a system that lets you reserve a car in 15-minute increments, those 15 extra minutes cost
just $1.25. This keeps you from being rushed at the end of your reservation.
If you are on the go and would like to extend or make a reservation, you can use our
automated system. Just call 877-363-0710 or go to citycarshare.org/m with your wireless web
enabled cell phone to give yourself more time. (If you are not able to extend your
reservation and another member has already reserved your car, please call the emergency line
so we can help the next member.)
