Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day!
For the last 40 years people all over the world have been celebrating Earth Day on April 22nd. Each year Earth Day
serves as a reminder that we all have a role in taking care of our planet.
As a City CarShare member, you have already taken action to protect Earth. Studies prove that when you share City
CarShare cars you will walk, bike, and take transit more than if you owned a car.* Because you
live a lower carbon-producing lifestyle, you are proving that we can reduce our eco-impact while leading a healthier
lifestyle and spending less money. Does this make you want to pat yourself on the back for celebrating Earth Day 365
days a year? Go ahead, you deserve it!
Together, as eco-conscious members, we drive over 40,000 fewer miles each day and will emit over 55 million fewer pounds
of CO2 this year alone. Since 2001, CCS members have driven over 100 million fewer miles on Bay Area roads and have
conserved over 130 million pounds of CO2 emissions. With our fleet of fuel and emissions-efficient cars, you can be
confident that whenever you share a City CarShare vehicle, you are part of the solution. Plus, one third of our fleet is
comprised of hybrid vehicles. In fact, when you reserve a hybrid car or one of our
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles, you are producing
25-90% less harmful pollutants and greenhouse gases than comparable gasoline cars. All in all, City CarShare is the
greenest car share provider in the Bay Area. By choosing to car share with us, you take an additional step toward a
happier Earth Day.
In honor of Earth Day, we challenge you to find one more thing you can do to lower your carbon footprint. Every year the
average American generates about 40,000 pounds of CO2 from personal transportation, home energy use and the consumption
of products & services.** Greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced through simple measures like changing light bulbs and
properly inflating your tires (which we already do!) For suggestions, visit the
EPA's Climate Change page and let us know
on our Facebook wall what you decide to do by April 22
for a chance to win $10 in driving credit.

Turn Your Old Phone into a Tree
In keeping with the Earth Day celebration this month, we are excited to partner with
MokuGift in support of a
PlantMyPhone reforestation program. This innovative program gives
individuals a new way to recycle cell phones and fund tree planting projects.
According the EPA, Americans annually retire 140 million mobile devices. Nearly 90% of these phones are improperly
disposed of in landfills. Cell phones waste often contains hazardous materials such as arsenic, antimony, beryllium,
cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc. Disposing cell phones in landfill causes these pollutants to seep into water
and land, which exposes wildlife to these toxins.
Mokugift, a San Francisco based social venture group working in partnership with the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP), hopes to double the cell phone-recycling rate from 10% to 20%. PlantMyPhone makes it easy for anyone
concerned about climate change--even Bay Area urbanites that lack access to planting space—to take part in the
Billion Tree Campaign. For each phone recycled, an
average of 15 trees (a minimum of 1 tree) will be planted though PlantMyPhone. City CarShare is partnering with
PlantMyPhone to make it easy for you to recycle your old cell phone and win prizes, up to $1,000!
How to turn your old cell phone into a tree:
Mail your phone in, postage free. Here's how:
Get a secure postage-paid mailer bag from inside our reusable shopping bags already available in all of our cars.
Or, stop by our office at 1182 Market Street, Suite 300, SF (in the Orpheum Theater building above the
Civic Center BART/Muni station) to pick up a mailer bag during our office hours, Monday - Friday, 9 am - 5 pm.
For a chance to win $1,000, register your tracking barcode at
http://register.plantmyphone.com. MokuGive will give 1 out of every 500 City CarShare members who participate one thousand dollars.
PlantMyPhone will plant trees based on the value of the recycled cell phone.
Get credits! City CarShare will award the first 20 members that send in one or more cell phones a $5 driving credit.

Member Perk & Highlight: b.vann originals
Looking for a one-of-a-kind locally created bag? This month we are excited to feature CCS member (since 2002) Brian Vann
and his b.vann originals handmade high-quality
and very stylish bags. As a self-taught sewer/designer, Brian became hooked on crafting about five years ago when his
grandmother taught him how to crochet. Since then, he's been designing and creating original handbags and messenger bags
out of new and vintage (recycled!) fabrics and unusual notions. That's Brian driving one of our original green beetles on his first day as a member!
As a CCS member, you get 10% off of a single bag, or 10% off + free shipping on two or more bags. Browse Brian's bags by
visiting his Etsy shop. Once you've selected your bags and are
checking out, just add a message to the seller on the Final Review page indicating you are City CarShare Member and Brian
will take care of the discount.
As a Bay Area nonprofit, we are thrilled to partner with and support local groups and businesses. If you are interested
in partnering with us to offer other City CarShare members a discount on your product or service, email
marketing@citycarshare.org for more information. Visit our Member Perks page to see what rewards we already have in
store for you.

Driving Tips: Reservation Shortcuts
Add a reservation reminder to your calendar
Back by popular demand, we have incorporated a downloadable calendar function into our new reservation system. To add a
reservation to your iCal or Outlook calendar, simply click on the "Download to calendar here" link near the bottom of
the My Reservation page. Reservations can be added to your calendar immediately after you make them or you can add them
at anytime when you view reservations you already made.
Search by Favorites and save time
Our new Favorites feature allows you to store addresses where you frequently pick up cars and then perform searches
using a nickname (like Home or Work) that you create for those locations. You can add a Favorite by going to your
Account Preferences. You can also perform a search and then simply click on the heart icon in the Your Search box. For
more details, watch the Managing Your Account demo video
on the help page.

Stories for the Road: Enjoy Audio Books in our Cars
Starting mid April we will be placing audio book samplers, courtesy of Random House Audio, in
all of our vehicles so you can enjoy built-in entertainment for your errands and road trips. Each CD will include
samples from a variety of genres, such as Fiction, Thriller, LGBT, Romance, and Children's titles. Look for the sampler
CDs in our cars' CD players or check the glove box. If you finish your trip and want to hear more, you may take the
sampler with you. (Like our reusable shopping bags, we will be stocking CDs as needed.) And if you want the full book on
audio, you can get a special City CarShare member discount by entering carshare in the promo field when
ordering. You can browse through their titles at http://www.randomhouse.com/audio. Tell us what you think of the CD's on
our Facebook wall too!
Thanks for Sharing!
